IEEE INFOCOM 2013 Student Travel Grant Opportunities

The IEEE INFOCOM 2013 conference is pleased to announce the availability of the following type of student travel grants:

A. Travel grants sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society.

B. US National Science Foundation (NSF) travel grant opportunity for US-based students.

C. Travel Grants Sponsored by the TREND European NoE for TREND team members.


Following the application guidelines below, a student may apply to one or more of the three categories for which he/she is eligible. The eligibility criteria for each category are:

A. These student travel grants are sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society. Applications are invited from qualified full-time graduate students. To qualify, a student must (i) be a valid Student Member of the COMSOC at the time of application; (ii) be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in engineering or related field in a college or university when submitting the application; (iii) be an author who will present an accepted paper at this Conference; (iv) applicant may not receive more than one IEEE ComSoc STG in any 12-month period.

B. These student travel grants are sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (approval pending). To qualify, a student must: (i) be a co-author of a paper accepted in this edition of INFOCOM, or the INFOCOM Mini-Conference, and (ii) be studying in accredited U.S. institution. Student recipients will be reimbursed (based on valid receipt) for their airfare expenses after the conference. Only airfare on a US-based carrier will be reimbursed by this type of support!

C. These student travel grants are sponsored by the TREND European NoE. To qualify, applicants must: (i) be officially listed as member of the TREND team in a participating University and/or research center at the time of application. Here and here are the links to the two lists of qualifying institutions. Prior to applying, applicants must check with their team leader to verify if they are officially listed. (ii) Not have received a similar grant in the past 12 months. This travel grant will be allocated to PhD students who are joint paper authors. The grants will be directly reimbursed to the recipient's institution through the standard TREND financial channels.


Application Procedure

An application for a student travel grant will consist of:

1. A request letter from the student (see below).

2. The student's vita.

3. A supporting letter from the student's graduate advisor.

4. An estimate of the following costs of attending INFOCOM: airfare, hotel, and conference registration. It is anticipated that travel grants will partially cover these overall costs.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.


The letter from the student should be at most one page, and include the following information:

1. A clear indication of the type(s) of travel grant the student is applying for (A and/or B and/or C).

2. When applicable (depending on the type(s) of travel grant requested), the title of the paper that has been accepted for the current edition of INFOCOM, or the INFOCOM Mini-Conference.

3. A brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date.

4. A description of areas reflected in the program of the current INFOCOM edition that would impact the student's research, and a statement about why the conference attendance is important to the student.


The advisor's recommendation letter for the student should include:

1. Confirmation that student is a bona fide full-time Ph.D. or M.S. candidate in good academic standing at the given institution.

2. Ways this particular student would benefit from attendance at the conference.

3. The strengths and potential contributions of the student.


Applicants should create their application as a single PDF file, following the format described above. The application is submitted as if it were a paper for the conference “INFOCOM'2013 - Student Travel Grant” (after login to EDAS, click on the "Submit Paper" tab, look for a conference called "INFOCOM'2013 - Student Travel Grant", and then submit the application.) FAQs

1. Should I merge my advisor's recommendation letter with my application together to submit to EDAS?

Yes. Every applicant should submit all application materials as a single PDF file to EDAS, which includes all required items listed in the "Application Procedure" section described above.

2. Should the advisor's recommendation letter be also in PDF?

Yes. It should be an item in the single application file in PDF submitted by the student applicant.

3. If my advisor prefers to submit the recommendation letter separately from my application, what should I do?

Please ask your advisor to send the recommendation letter via e-mail to both STG co-chairs, Arturo Azcorra (arturo.azcorra@imdea.org) and Qun Li (liqun@cs.wm.edu).

4. Am I eligible to apply for the student travel grant being an author of a workshop paper?

You are welcome to apply, but please consider that your application will be given lower priority with respect to regular INFOCOM papers, so the probability of receiving an award is quite low.
